How Road Trip Fuel & Toll Costs Are Calculated

Budgeting for a highway journey involves engine consumption arithmetic combined with automated FASTag plaza tolls:

  1. Fuel Required (Volume): Fuel Required (L) = Total Distance (km) ÷ Vehicle Mileage (km/l)
  2. Fuel Expenditure: Fuel Cost = Fuel Required (L) × Fuel Price per Unit
  3. Total Journey Outgo: Total Trip Cost = Fuel Cost + Highway Toll Charges (FASTag)
  4. Per-Passenger Split: Individual Share = Total Trip Cost ÷ Number of Travellers

Average Vehicle Mileage Reference

Typical real-world mileage benchmarks and running costs across common vehicle categories in India:

Vehicle Category Fuel Type Typical Mileage Range Approx. Fuel Cost / km
Commuter Motorcycles (100–125cc) Petrol 55 – 65 km/l 1.50 – 1.80 INR
Performance Bikes (300cc+) Petrol 25 – 35 km/l 2.80 – 3.90 INR
Hatchback / Compact Sedans Petrol / Diesel 16 – 22 km/l 4.50 – 6.00 INR
Mid-Size & Full SUVs Petrol / Diesel 10 – 15 km/l 6.50 – 10.00 INR
CNG Vehicles CNG 24 – 32 km/kg 2.50 – 3.50 INR

FASTag Return Pass Discount:
National Highway (NHAI) toll plazas provide an automatic ~25% return journey discount if the vehicle crosses back through the same plaza within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this calculator for CNG or Diesel vehicles?

Yes. Enter your vehicle's specific mileage (km/l for diesel or km/kg for CNG) in the Mileage box and the prevailing fuel rate per unit in the Fuel Price box.

How do highway speeds affect fuel consumption?

Cruising smoothly at 70–90 km/h in top gear maximizes fuel economy. Driving consistently above 110 km/h increases aerodynamic drag and drops fuel efficiency by up to 20%.

Are parking and state entry taxes included?

You can add parking tickets or state entry permit fees directly into the Toll Charges field to get an accurate total expense split.

Does round trip mode double the fuel and toll charges automatically?

Yes. When Round Trip is toggled, the base one-way distance and one-way toll charges are automatically multiplied by 2 for return journey estimation.
